May We Help You or a Loved One?

Where an individual’s coping responses have been ineffective, situations can lead to emotional and relationship difficulties, The Center for Emotional Restructuring can help. The help can involve individual therapy, or in some cases, Dr. Moss may agree to do couple counseling or couple therapy. The clinical biopsychological approach has primarily been directed toward the individual. Treatment at the Center aids individuals to:

* Deal effectively with negative emotional memories
* Change their emotional aspect of thinking
* Align emotional reactions with the more rational thinking processes

Emotional Restructuring is based on the premise that when a person can feel differently about various situations, it is possible to react differently and in a more rational manner.

For those who wish to gain a better understanding of Dr. Moss’ approach to therapy prior to scheduling an appointment, the books and CDs he has done can provide that information. In fact, the first CD is the exact information Dr. Moss uses to explain the development of an individual’s psychological problems, as well as the areas of treatment. Thus, the cost of the CD set is less than the cost of a session and offers an inexpensive way for any potential patient to determine if the clinical biopsychological approach may be of interest.

Please be aware that Dr. Moss only discusses Christian matters with patients who wish to incorporate that into their therapy. He clearly feels that both healthy Christian views and healthy psychological treatment are compatible. However, he has treated a number of patients who do not have Christian views. The Christian views he discusses in therapy with those who do have an interest are discussed in the two Christian oriented books he has done.

In couple counseling or couple therapy, the relationship is the primary focus. Thus, this is typically done from the outset with both parties being present. Dr. Moss discourages his doing couple counseling therapy if he has already been providing individual therapy. This is due to the fact that it is very difficult for the partner to enter into any form of couple therapy if there is already a therapeutic alliance between Dr. Moss and the other partner. In many cases, Dr. Moss will recommend he make a referral to other marital counselors who specialize in couple counseling.

Dr. Moss uses behavioral marital skills training when he performs couple therapy. Examples are communication training, behavioral contract negotiating, establishing joint problem solving times, increasing joint reinforcing activities, using time outs when emotions get too heated, and so forth. For those interested in trying to implement these approaches for themselves, these are explained on the 6th CD of the set entitled: “Bad Feelings, Bad Thoughts, and Bad People: Understanding and Dealing with Each.”

Also of importance in any relationship is understanding one’s partner. The new book, For Better or for Worse: Am I in Love with a Giver or a Taker provides an extensive discussion of information Dr. Moss uses in the context of both individual and couple therapy.
